What is a glacier worth?

Photographs from a research expedition in 1902 sparked our journey to Kyrgyzstan. They were the starting point, not the destination: alongside ETH Zurich researchers and Kyrgyz partners, the team set out on present-day field missions in the Tian Shan, collecting glacier samples and drone imagery for 3D mapping.

Half personal expedition, half glacier science. River crossings, icy nights and moments of friendship bring you close to life on the trail. Research in the mountains and the laboratory opens a wider view of glaciers worldwide — their changing future, their importance for water, and the emotional value of these landscapes.
